Q&A with Anne Rasmussen, Head of Design at Custommade

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

We are delighted to introduce Anne Rasmussen, Custommade's Head Designer. She took time out of her extremely busy schedule to chat to us about working for one of Denmark's leading womenswear brands, collaborating with The Hambledon and living life the Scandinavian way. Tak.

We always like to tell a story for the season. What is the inspiration behind the SS16 Custommade collection?

SS2016 takes its starting point in little travel histories. A girl travels and discovers new refined universes. Curious, she travels with her camera, enjoying both spring's brighter days and nights as well as traveling mentally. The colors are based on the graphic base palette. With the grey and dark blue tones, and along with a lot of white, gorgeous accent colors are sprinkled into the collection and adjusted to each month of delivery. The collection is flirtational girly with lace details and ruffles while still with a focus on the long graphic lengths and lines that completes the collection. The prints are original vintage prints.

And your favourite piece(s) in the collection?

That´s a hard one. I love our lace and knitwear in this collection and particularly the Jasmina jacket (pictured left) is so cool!

How would you describe a Custommade woman?

A typical Custommade woman is a modern-minded, cosmopolitan woman who craves simple sophistication.

What can our customers expect from the Custommade project at The Hambledon?

They can expect a full Custommade experience with styles that they can feel comfortable and chic in. The silhouettes are feminine but also simple and easy to wear. As always we focus on the high quality in our fabrics. Easy to wear and easy to love is the best way to describe the look and feel of Custommade.

We're a bit obsessed with Danish style. How would you define it? How can we be more Danish?

The street style is simple and sophisticated including when it comes to the use of colors. But Danish women can be creative (especially during the summer). In general I actually think that Danish women put a lot of effort into looking effortlessly chic.

Describe a typical day at Custommade HQ

A typical day consists of finding inspiration, drawing patterns - and when we are further in the process me and my design team spends a lot of time on fitting the prototypes - and getting all the details in place.

What do you most like about what you do?

I love the creative process and seek inspiration from many different places - from patterns, cuts, poems - and girls on the streets of Copenhagen and Paris. Nothing beats the feeling of having created a collection that women across the world find beautiful.

Who/what couldn't you live without?

That´s easy! My three children and my husband.

What has been your proudest Custommade moment?

There have been many - but in 2014 we won the renowned Guldknappen award by the women's magazine ALT for Damerne. The award is given to a Danish fashion brand, that has been extraordinary in creating success, and a brand that the Danish woman can relate to. That was a proud moment!

What's your favourite Danish crime drama? And your favourite Danish swear word. And your top insider tip for a trip to Copenhagen.

I like many of the Danish crime dramas - but some of my favorites are Drabet and Borgen. The swear word I use the most is “sgu” (I guess it´s damn in English) - it´s not even a real swear word anymore. Copenhagen is really one of the best cities in the world when it comes to eating well - so prioritize in order to visit some of the many delicious restaurants. And visit Torvehallerne - Copenhagen´s delicious farmers' market, offering tons of organic, sustainable and locally-sourced food fare. There are also free samples of certain items, so even if you don't have a lot of money you can still enjoy some local flavor.

Custommade Project

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

Danish womenswear favourites are taking over the Project Space (Friday 5 February - Sunday 6 March) for their first UK shop within a shop. Custommade, founded in 2002 by Christian Dam is based in Copenhagen, a city of effortless chic. The focus of the brand is contemporary, urban essentials and their stated aim is to make clothes for “modern minded and cosmopolitan women who crave simple sophistication”. Yep. That’s us. Whilst we like to think that The Hambledon offers a beautiful edit of the range every season, this project gives us the opportunity to show the collection in much greater depth. And the Danes will be in store for a few days to give the space a characteristic Scandinavian vibe (thanks to Kat and Charlotte especially for their amazing polyboard wrangling!).

Read our interview with Anne Rasmussen, Custommade’s head designer, in our news pages and head over to our Competition Page for the chance to win one of 10 Custommade goody bags.

So much gorgeousness here from all over the world: chocolates from England, Turkish Delight from County Cork, jewellery from Denmark, ponies from England, socks from France, make up bags from Los Angeles, pennants from England and pens from South Korea and Germany. Cosmopolitan Christmas at The Hambledon. And we're not making generalisations about pink, it just looks so darn pretty.

Style Inspiration: Linda McCartney AW15

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

Story 2 for our womenswear collections. Autumn Winter 15 is very strongly influenced by the 1970s. But we didn't want to take it into a flares and tie dye parody of the decade. We were looking for something more real and a bit more attainable for ordinary life.

Linda McCartney, with her effortless joie de vivre, her natural beauty and her sense of fun, is our muse for the season. We've taken inspiration from her Scottish rural idyll at High Park Farm in Kintyre. This is a life of fresh air, beaches, horses and children. Think fairisle knits, casual denim and chunky tweed and channel your inner Linda with MiH, &Daughter, Leon & Harper and Sessun.

Linda. We salute you.

Craie Bags

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

We love a handbag and a bag with a split personality suits us even better. French designers Craie have created the perfect bag for every occassion; sparkly on the outside and plain on the inside. Or do you want to reverse that? How about two colour options? In case you can't understand what our vacillating brains are on about, watch the helpful little video below.

Inspired Bonne Maison

Our favourite sock makers have taken Ancient Greece and Japanese Kimonos as their inspiration this season, but only they could go via Nicholas Party, Jean Arp and David Hockney. The result is their trademark block patterns and impressionistic style dyed on to high quality Egyptian cotton yarn which is then spun into super fine and comfortable socks. Your feet will never have been so well dressed.

Style Inspiration: Paris Metro AW15

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

Every season we like to have a theme, or a couple of themes, on which to hang our womenswear collections. We spotted a bit of a gamine Parisian thing going on for Autumn Winter 15 and we've called it Paris Metro.

Here's our take on French chic. It's all about oversize knits, cocoon coats, ladylike blouses, matelots and a boyfriend jean. We're loving Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jean Seberg for that insouciant boy/girl androgyny thing and we're loving Simone de Beauvoir for a bit of intellectual rigour. It's all about looking as if you really haven't tried.

Get the look with Des Petits Hauts, Bellerose, Sessun and Mads Norgaard.

The return of our Hudson friends

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

Our lovely friends at Hudson (thank you Claire, Madeleine, Sandra and Bronagh) have been working their shoe shop magic on the womenswear floor. We've marshalled the old decorating ladder and the chip board and the Hudson Project is now live. And we have just about every kind of boot for every kind of occasion. Old favourites biker Tatham, riding boot Wistow and preppie loafer Stanford are making a comeback. But we're introducing lots of new including Apisi, a grey velvet cowboy (howdy); Azi, a winter white cowboy (likewise, howdy); Bisque, a leather hi top and Crispin, a chunky heeled and pointy toed dressing up boot.
And don't forget the competition. Sign up to our mailing lists and you could win an overnight stay at Cowley Manor (with dinner and spa treatments), a pair of Hudson boots and £50 to spend at The Hambledon.
Hudson is celebrating its 25th Year so we're very pleased to be part of the party.

KBL Sunglasses

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

Founded in New York in 2009, KBL (Kind of Bohemian Lifestyle - but I think we'll have to forgive them a dreadful acronym) is the latest eyewear brand to hit The Hambledon. Launched by Adam and Kara Mendelsohn whose collective experience includes stints at Oliver Peoples, Mykita and Thakoon, this is a brand that knows its fashion and sunglasses onions. Featuring Italian acetate, milled Japanese construction and a cute Empire State Building on some of the arms, these are beautifully made and effortlessly stylish. And just in time for sunny holidays.

ban.do

Facebook Twitter Pintrest

We wanted to write a provenance all about the history of Ban-do. But then we went and found this on their website and it was way more fun and a whole lot more entertaining than waffling on about the Founder (who incidentally is Jen Gotch, who incidentally everyone at The Hambledon thinks is brilliant).
'Oh hey. We're Ban.do. Let's be BFFs. We can stay up late watching 80s rom coms and eating pizzas with everything on it (except anchovies, grooosss!). Cool. Now that it's settled we should probably tell you a bit more about us. We're a gift, tech, stationery and fashion accessories company designed by a pretty spectacular group of girls in sunny Los Angeles. We love bright colours, irreverent patterns, quirky sayings and kittens. OMG we love kittens so much. Forever inspired by Champagned soaked, all night dance parties, we are serious about fun and so thrilled you are here.'
Enough said. Get your Ban-do here.
